The Theory of Inventive Problem Solving, commonly recognized by the acronym for the Russian progenitor, TRIZ, is a powerful and comprehensive systematic approach to innovation. There is a broad foundation of TRIZ elements that have been empirically derived and this is coupled to a large set of practical heuristics. This presentation is simply an introduction to several of the fundamental elements that you would find available in the TRIZ body of knowledge. After reviewing this you will at least know what you don’t know. Innovation is something I have focused on professionally and it is the main endeavor that my consulting firm, The Inventioneering Company is engaged in. You may also take a look at Real Innovation (co-founded) and The TRIZ Journal (editor for more than 10 years). I will be posting more information about innovation and TRIZ…look for it here.

Axiomatic Design (AD) can be used to give insight into the degree of coupling found in a system (among several other important uses). This then provides the opportunity for coupling and complexity to be controlled and reduced by design. This paper presents a case-study based on a thermal package that uses an exothermic chemical reaction to produce heat thereby replacing heating systems currently used that use combustion reactions involving ethanol and/or methanol. We explore coupling, reangularity (AD), semangularity (AD), and ideality (from TRIZ). We present the design matrix, cascading, information content, isograms, the p-diagram, robustness, signal-to-noise ratio, bias, capability, and an ideality model based on a decomposition of the design matrix.

More so than many- Deming, Juran, and Feigenbaum have shaped the way quality is viewed in the modern world. In my latest book, Insourcing Innovation, I write about the systematization and reduction of quality to a science (the book is about innovation but quality is discussed as well). This is an important evolutionary step as quality has historically been very much an art. Read about many of the key elements these three have introduced to the realm of quality in this talk I gave as keynote of an international quality conference hosted by Monterrey Tech in Monterrey, Mexico (2004). You’ll also be able to see some images of a few of the projects I have been involved with.

So many who should not be involved with this holiday are completely involved. The Church of Satan welcomes this universal acceptance of Halloween with their annual message:

“This night, Satanists smile at the amateur explorers of their own inner darkness, for we know that they enjoy their brief dip into the pool of the “shadow world.” So on this eve of magic and mystery, we encourage their tenebrous fantasies, the candied indulgence, and the wide-ranging evocation of our aesthetics (while tolerating some of the chintzy versions), even if it is but once per annum. At other times of the year, when those not of our tribe shake their heads in wonder at us, we can point out that they find some understanding by examining their own All Hallow’s Eve doings, as an alternative to our recent favored saying” “We’re just part of the Addams clan.” So, have an indulgent, mysterious, and deeply satisfying Samhain.” – Church of Satan website

I expose the varied origins of Halloween and explain why Christians should have NOTHING to do with this day…
