Anthracite

April 02nd, 2010 | Category: Poem

Your heart and soul glisten in the moonlight
Bared and cleaved as disgorged anthracite
Alone and scared at midnight
You hope and pray it’s all right
And then you lose your site

You can sense the breath as the beast approaches
But you are unable to react
On your back for the last attack
It comes in waves of anguish

It all passes as does the fright
Liquid red and cold anthracite
Dropped love fractures scattering the light
Of the life leaving your eyes
No one dies and then cries

You can sense the breath as the beast approaches
But you are unable to react
On your back for the last attack
It comes in waves of anguish

You have been found guilty of covenants with the devil

Your ministry reeks of death and rancor
You taste guile and blood with wicked canker
Rancid rambling as you murmur
Fate will leave your fetid feelings
At the door of tomorrow’s disenchantment

Feeling like you’ve done this before
On another planet behind a different door
Acid rain waters anthracnose
There is your hope and there it goes

You have been found guilty of covenants with the devil

Phoebe, Our Springer Spaniel

April 02nd, 2010 | Category: Poem

Hey- she looked so small next to her brothers and sisters
And the box she slept in was much too big for her
But her heart was larger than any other
And she loved us with it every day
For fourteen years she was by our side
Chasing birds and squirrels and rabbits
Springing off our wall, a proud example of her breed
We will always recall her smile and her playful ways
Her restlessness and stubborn loyalty
Her sisters will miss her as we will
But we know she is in a flowered field
Under the sun
At a full sprint- ears flying behind her
A squirrel just out of reach
And she couldn’t be happier
Hey- we will never forget our beloved dog
