Selfish

Category: Poem

You sit and stare directly ahead
Alive outside and inwardly dead
Pretending truth from the things you’ve read
Branded “selfish” across your forehead

The rain drops drown it out
Pitter patter unending shout
Liquid torrent and then it ends
Blown away by westward winds

Cast aside- tempest subsiding
In the open and no longer hiding
Clawed marks from the past
Open wounds that eternally last

Unable to pass it by
You stare mistake dead in the eye
White to white and black to black
Deep in despair- no turning back

You did it for yourself with anger and malice
Directed inward and so intense
The past snapped around your waist
And tore into your breast

The blood pours out with your future
Cold- you look into the sky
And the same blank reflection you’ve seen before
Mirrors sadness in your eyes
