Keep the Door Open
Melancholy dreams leave the door open
A light shines the way to the corner
I don’t go there for fear it lurks
As it did long ago and once before
When it growled and slammed the door
The marks from claws and teeth
Hurt me deep when the lightning strikes
Driving the quake into my room
And my bed levitates with each crack
I feel the claws rake my bloody back
The sheet sticks and dries to my skin
Has it come in? Has it come in?
I can sense its eyes burning into me
But it cannot see – it cannot see
Torment has blinded the beholder
Something must have come for it
When it was a little boy
And the dark corner held its secret
Pain and death, there is no joy
Anguish has ripped compassion from its very soul
It comes for me – It comes for me
The door is shut for good this time
Saints and Sinners
Saints and sinners eating the flesh
Of the beast known as remorse
Tasting rancor and divorce in equal measures
Separating what was from what could have been
And the enemies from the friends
The table is full as are the bellies
Of the constrained angel and beast
No bones left untouched
When the wicked come to feast
The cloth is stained with pain
And anger drawn as the skin across a drum
Taught and fraught with the fear
Remembrance brings to all or none
Saints and sinners – hand in hand
One will sit while the other stands
