Sunshine
“Dream Sweet,” she said as she closed her eyes. He watched her drift to sleep, noticing the way her hair fell across her face. She was so peaceful and the calm on her lips moved him to reach out to touch them. He caught himself before contact so as not to disturb her. He wanted to watch her lay there and rest but the peacefulness of the situation caused his eyes to close as well. But he could still see her. In his mind’s eye she was there with him. She danced in the moonlight to a song only she could hear. But she knew he was watching and her eyes caught his often. He reached out his hand again and this time her fingers touched his. When their fingers touched they both smiled. She danced a while but it didn’t seem like much time had passed. Watching her never felt like it was work. She smiled and her hair danced with her. The moonlight on his face taught her everything she needed to know. He was in love, awake and asleep.
He turned once and touched her body with his. The bed was small but they didn’t mind. Closeness to his Love was comfort. He moved the hair from her cheek and noticed the rosy hue—the heat from the dance made her olive skin flush. She slept and the rhythm of her breathing kept time with the rustle of leaves heard outside their window. He watched her lay there and he remembered all the reasons he loved her. He remembered her laugh when she talked about her dogs the day they met. He remembered her easy manner that made him feel important without being everything. She had him and her sleep only strengthened her hold. While she slept he still thought of her time with him awake. He must have fallen asleep again. Or was he dreaming he was dreaming? Either way she was there with him and it was well. He closed his eyes again and he couldn’t remember life without her. He was warm despite the rain and chill in the air.
He must have slept for hours because the dark was gone when he stirred. He was still warm and he knew it was a gift his love for her had given him. She was watching him now. She leaned in and kissed him on his forehead. Her smile lit the room but didn’t cause him to squint. How could it? She was all to him. Like the flowers seek the sun he looked for her. Their eyes met like they had in the dream and he knew she was the one. She was his awakening, his slumber, his dream, and his Sunshine.
